Process Update - As of 11/14/24

AB 2022 requires public jurisdictions across California to re-name places that currently use the Sq_ word. Local entities must utilize a prescribed public process that involves consultation with residents and local tribal entities. The City Council then makes a recommendation for replacement names to the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CAGN), which will make the final determination of the replacement names, taking into account the Council's recommendations.

Pursuant to AB 2022, the City has consulted with local Native American tribes regarding preferred names for the streets. The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation has suggested the name “Tebti,” which means “streams flow together.”

The Council held a public workshop on this matter on June 26, 2024.   City staff held an online meeting with residents on July 10 to answer questions and solicit additional feedback.    At the Council meeting of July 17, the City Council unanimously approved the name “Tebti” as the recommended new name for Sq_ Road and Sq_ Court.

On November 14, 2024 the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CAGN) unanimously voted to approve the West Sacramento City Council’s requested replacement name of “Tebti” for Sq_Road and Sq_Court. Staff will begin the process immediately but the streets will not officially change names until January 10, 2025. Watch this website for additional information.

Sq_ Road Re-naming Q+A

Why is the City planning to re-name Sq_ Road and Sq_ Court?
If the word is offensive, why were these streets given these names in the first place?
Will residents receive any compensation for the street name change?
Will my mail service be disrupted?
Do I need to change my property records at the County?
Are other public places changing their names?
What do I need to do when my street name changes?

Updating Your Street Address

The City is taking steps to make the renaming process as simple as possible for residents. The City will notify the U.S. Postal Service, Yolo County Assessor, and all relevant public safety agencies of the new street name. USPS will send mail with Sq_ addresses to your new street address for a period of time after the replacement name is in place, so there should be no disruption to your mail service while you update your address.

Since the County tracks parcels by Assessor’s Parcel Number (APN), not address, no action is necessary to update property records. The City will also make the necessary changes to its own records, so no resident action is needed to update the City utility records, etc.

Generally speaking, residents will need to notify any other person or entity that sends them mail. This is usually a very simple process. Here are some ideas and shortcuts to help you update your address with key entities.

We recommend that you begin notifying affected entities of your new address in early January, 2025.

Personal circumstances vary, so the list below is intended only as a guide, not an all-inclusive list of entities with which you will need to update your address.
